CORK  WASTEWATER TREATMENT  PLANT

The Republic of Ireland has been experiencing rapid economic growth for a number of years. Cork, as the second largest city in the country, is the economic and cultural center of the entire southeast region of the island. The city is crossed by the River Lee, which used to serve as a drainage channel for the various sewage systems, which is why the sewage collection and treatment project materialized in the early 1990s. As a result of the international tender promoted at the end of 1999 by the Cork Country Council, a bid was submitted for the design, construction, operation and maintenance for 20 years of the wastewater treatment and sludge recycling plant.

TECHNICAL ASPECTS

The part assigned to VINCI Construction Grands Projets included the design and construction of the civil engineering works of the plant (wastewater treatment and sludge recycling). The basic principle of this project consists of a classical gravity treatment with discharge of the clean water into Cork Bay via a submarine outfall. For ecological and environmental reasons, all the ponds are buried, and since the architecture of the buildings and metal tanks had to blend in with the local landscape, this was carefully studied. Following the plant's operational flow, the civil engineering works include a wastewater intake building, with a screening and degreasing pre-treatment for local flows, a double buried reinforced concrete basin for pre-aeration. Primary treatment is provided by 2 circular reinforced concrete tanks with a diameter of 35 meters. 4 circular reinforced concrete tanks of 35 meters in diameter provide temporary storage in case of storms. Secondary treatment is provided by 8 Cyclazur-type secondary reinforced concrete tanks 45 meters long and 35 meters wide, as well as a building for effluent ventilation. The outfall to the sea consists of a polyethylene pipe with an inner diameter of 1,480 millimeters and a length of 800 meters, which discharges the treated water into Cork Bay.

IMPACT

Located on the edge of a residential area, between small country houses, golf courses and a nature reserve for fauna and flora, the project was subject to constant monitoring and permanent controls by the neighbors. These were constituted as a partnership during both the design and construction phases: landscaping and choice of floral species, supervision of the ecosystem of the marshland areas, control of the quantities of dust generated, control of the acoustic levels produced by the construction equipment, and even comments on the foliage of the young trees planted on the hills.

-What did you like most about the video?

1. How they show their culture

-Have you ever been abroad?

2. Sure

-Which Colombian cities have you visited?

3. More than three cities

-Do you remember any of the monuments you visited?

4. Chicamocha Park

-Any point of interest or favorite?
5. Bucaramanga in general

-Do you recommend visiting any of these cities? Why? Why not?
6. bucaramanga, good weather, good food and good places

What surprised you the most?
1. The infrastructure and everything is very harmonious
-Is there anything you already knew?
- I didn't know anything
-Have you chosen your favorite place in Cork?
3. The Cathedral

-What can you do to recycle?
Separate waste and reuse it in other things (e.g. a water bottle can be a good storage for plastic bags).
-What kind of products can you recycle? Do you already recycle something at home?
-Cardboard, paper, glass, plastic, etc. I recycle plastic bottles
-What kind of policies can local governments make to encourage citizens to recycle?
- Punish people who do not recycle (it is already done in the Republic of Ireland in general), give discounts on certain services for recycling, vouchers, etc.
Have you ever recycled a piece of furniture or an X-ray photograph?
- Nope

What do you usually recycle at home?
- Plastic bottles, cans, etc.
-Have you ever visited a recycling plant?
- I had the opportunity to go to one and it was interesting.
-Do you think recycling is necessary today? What about hybrid cars? Do you know anyone who owns one?
-Recycling is very necessary, it hurts to see that because of not recycling we are damaging the ecosystem. Hybrid cars seem to be an option.
-Do you think solar energy could be the energy of the future? Why? Why not?
- It can be a cleaner energy and therefore can give more possibilities.

About the Yew
Found at a number of locations around the Park, Yew has important medicinal uses for mankind.
Most parts of the tree are poisonous but its leaves are used to produce an anti-cancer drug, while the flesh of its berries can be used as a laxative and diuretic.
The male Yew tree produces cones - like most conifers – whereas a bright red and eye-catching berry grows on the female plant from early September.
Long associated with and planted near graveyards, Yew is a symbol of immortality and is able to rejuvenate itself with the trees living for up to 1,000 years.

Does Fota Wildlife Park work with any animal species in danger of extinction?

The concept of reintroduction programmes quickly followed and over 200 species – including the Arabian Oryx, Golden Lion Tamarin and Californian Condor - have now been saved from extinction and re-introduced back into their own native habitat by carefully established and monitored breeding programmes.
